What are other examples of Reality being derived from Science Fiction?
Star Trek Communicator from the late 60s -> cell phone.
TNG Padd – > iPad
Commercial Space Travel -> Commercial Space Travel
And so on. Is there a comprehensive list somewhere?
admin answers:
A comprehensive list? I don’t know if that’s even possible.
Here’s one: The Geosynchronous orbit. This was first written about by Carl Sagan, he described it in detail (how a satellite can be made to hover over a fixed point on the earth). Its now known as the Sagan orbit or the Sagan trajectory.
Also the TASER: It actually comes from a series of books: The Tomas A. Smith Electric Rifle, which was a series of paperbacks in the 1930s.
Edit: the gestures seen in the movie “minority report” were described in detail in an earlier William Gibson work, “Count Zero,:” and were first seen on film in the movie “Johnnie Mnemonic.”
